The Nursing Informatics curriculum is interdisciplinary and a mix of informatics and other courses to build your informatics and leadership skills and systems-level thinking. Informatics-related courses range from systems analysis, programming, clinical decision support, standards and terminology for interoperability, and more. Most of the informatics courses are co-offered with the Biomedical Informatics Department allowing you to build interdisciplinary skills and broaden your horizon.
Our faculty are nationally-known nursing informatics leaders with practical and research experience at the University of Utah, Intermountain Healthcare, and the VA. The faculty will work with you to identify experiences to match your interests.

Interactive learning comes in a variety of ways:
- Group assignments, where you collaborate via email, a discussion forum, or Zoom Web meetings to answer a problem set or design something new.
- Contributions to a discussion forum, where you directly respond to previous posts.
- Peer reviews, where you review and comment on assignments from other students.
- Periodic synchronous ‘lab’ sessions when students and faculty meet online for 1- 1.5 hours to engage in interactive learning to reinforce and supplement the online content.
Our classes also offer multiple routes to stay connected and get help:
- Communicate directly with the instructor via email.
- Participate in and guide online discussions.
- Attend online office hours in discussion threads or on the phone.
- Instructors are available in “real” office hours for students on or near campus; for some courses we offer Q&A sessions in a classroom.
Master of Science in Nursing Informatics
The full-time program of study is 5 semesters (including the summer semester between year 1 and 2). Most students continue to work part- or full-time while in the program. Many transition to a new position with an informatics focus while in the program or soon after.
To graduate, the student must successfully complete the graduate nursing and informatics courses included in the program of study for the relevant year.
Total program tuition at current rates: $36,450* ($900 per credit x 40.5 credits).

An MS (Nursing Informatics) prepares you with analytic skills and knowledge to improve systems that support clinical decision making, bridge technology and patient care, and move into leadership roles that influence systems of care.
Nursing informatics is a dynamic, interdisciplinary healthcare specialty with no end to new opportunities and challenges as clinical and health IT systems evolve.
Nurse Informaticists practice wherever you find health information! Our graduates work for healthcare systems, public health, EHR/decision support vendors, software and analytic companies, and more.

The following are the minimum requirements needed to apply:
- Be licensed to practice as a registered nurse or advanced practice registered nurse
- Completed application for graduate admission
- Transcripts from ANY and ALL colleges and universities attended, including the University of Utah, must be uploaded as part of the graduate application
- Evidence of a bachelor's degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited university or college, and a nationally accredited nursing school from either:
- The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation (CCNE), or
- The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale
- A current resume or curriculum vitae
- Three (3) professional references
- Professional goal statement
